It’s the long, hot summer of 1958 and struggling private eye Johnny Davis embarks on a seemingly routine missing person case which drags him out of his comfort zone of sharp suits, bottle blondes and Tiki bars into a nightmare world of mind-altering drugs, deception and murder. From the cocktail lounges and beatnik clubs of LA to the desert resort of Palm Springs and the island paradise of Hawaii, Johnny is forced to choose between country and conscience, love and lust, and life and death.

"Tiki Noir" is apparently a thriving subcategory of crime fiction, and author/veteran DJ/renowned tiki culturist/lounge music legend Jay Strongman sets a new gold standard with his very first stab at the genre. Set in 1958, the settings include L.A., Palm Springs and Hawaii, the period and places deftly described with such conviction that "Ritual of the Savage" truly comes off like a long lost pop literary classic, buried Polynesian pulp treasure recently unearthed for contemporary consumption. Strongman is British, and he brings a foreigner's appreciation of iconic midcentury Americana to the torrid text. The smoothly composed narration by his P.I. protagonist Johnny Davis rings true throughout the many twists and turns, never sounding corny or kitschy, but authentically hard-boiled and world weary (if charmingly vulnerable) in the traditional spirit of the genre. Characters both historically real and imagined weave in and out of the fast-paced plot, which stylishly steeped in richly romantic, classically cool atmosphere. Put on some Les Bater, mi a Trader Vic's Mai Tai, sit back in your favorite lounge chair, and immerse yourself in vicarious thrills from a bygone era.Product details

Ritual of the Savage edition by Jay Strongman Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
Enjoyable thriller set in the Fifties. Full of references to music, cars, Kim Novak, etc. and obviously well researched. Was pulled along by an interesting story which was well written. Looking forward to the next one!
A fun and well detailed mid century romp. I love noir style movies and this book reads like one. The characters are well developed and the story moves at a brisk pace. If you like old private eye movies you will love this book.
This is a fun book, and the lead character, Johnny, is so typically male that I had to roll my eyes a few times because I recognized the behavior. Mr. Strongman has detailed characters, and has some twists and turns that you won't want to miss out on. It was a good read, and I recommend it.
I LOVE THIS BOOK!!! The main character of Johnny Davis is such a fabulous character. On one hand he's a real chauvinist and a womanizer, but on the other, his internal dialog is so deep and introspective and thoughtful.... such a wonderful and complex character. And then there is Justine... sexy, mysterious, wounded.... and if I had to sum her up she is nothing short of an "enigma." The way Strongman writes is so very evocative and nostalgic as well. There is a nod to Raymond Chandler with his writing style - but more hopeful and not as nihilistic. I hope it does get made into a film because it truly reads like one. I want to live in 1958 because of this book!!!! It's great!!! (And I'm not a huge reader, so that says something.)
I loved Jay Strongman’s “Tiki Mugs” book, so I was intrigued to see what his first novel would be like, and I’m happy to say it’s really good. "Ritual of the Savage" is a fast-paced book with some intriguing twists and turns, and Strongman does a great job of evoking the Los Angeles and Hawaii of the late 1950s.
I especially liked the way the author weaves real places, people and music of the era into his fiction alongside his own fascinating cast of characters. The novel’s “hero” (if that is the right word), has a dark side but is basically a good guy at heart and despite his flaws I found myself rooting for him as the story went on. Now I'm hungry for a sequel and I do hope there will be one.
All-in-all a great read!
Jolly good mystery/detective yarn. Loved the Fifties atmosphere that Stongman provided through lots of descriptive details about the period.
Characters were nicely developed and the pacing of the action just right.
