Judah Greer is an alcoholic without the will to sober up, that is until his long lost daughter reenters his life. When Mara becomes the twenty-fifth victim of a serial kidnapper, he launches out on a frantic quest to save her. Aided by a mysterious young girl who may or may not exist, and a detective with a vendetta of her own, he tumbles down a rabbit hole and into a world where nothing is certain and no one is safe. The spiritual clashes with the natural in this supernatural thriller as events spiral out of control toward an ending prophesied from the most ancient of Holy texts "Behold, I will send you the spirit of Elijah before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord. He will turn the hearts of the fathers to their children, and the hearts of the children to their fathers, lest I come and strike the earth with a curse."

Hush child David Halvorsen 9781520895406 Books

Halvorsen’s novel packs an emotional wallop. The story is about a ex-con alcoholic named Judah Greer who is, needless to say, down on his luck and, frankly, not living for much at all. That is, until his teenage daughter comes into his life. Watching the two get to know each other is one of the delights of this novel. Judah doesn’t really know how to be a dad yet, and Mara doesn’t know how to relate to her dad – but the dynamic is great and touching. Halvorsen get’s to the heart of the relationship here, and it will hook you from the start.

I won’t summarize the story here – you can review the novel’s description. But from a reader’s perspective, the story was very well written, nicely structured, and there is tremendous suspense and emotional tension that will keep you reading until well into the night. I’ll definitely be on the lookout for new novels coming out from Halvorsen in the future. He’s a writer with talent. Highly Recommended!

Hush, Child by David Halvorsen is a supernatural thriller that explores powerful themes — addiction, love, and redemption. Judah Greer is drowning in alcohol, unable to summon a strong enough will to pull out. But then something happens — his long lost daughter gets kidnapped and he sets out to rescue her. Watch as he works with a mysterious young girl who could be a figment of his imagination, and an astute detective as they explore very dangerous places in search of Mara.

Here is a story that is very inspiring and entertaining, a story that features characters who are real, because they are flawed and hugely believable. I enjoyed the spiritual undertones of the story, the well-designed setting, and Greer’s journey. This is a page-turner, a story that is as thoughtful as it is delightful.
Hush Child, Direct Publishing, a mystical, spiritual, mystery of a somewhat allegorical nature by David Halverson.
Plot The tenure of the story is set with a quote from Malachi 54-6 “See, I will send the prophet Elijah to you before that great and terrible day of the Lord comes. He will turn the hearts of the parents to their children, and the hearts of the children to their parents or else I will come and strike the earth with a curse.” The story then opens with a man whose face is marred with distinctive scars placing his hand on the prostitute’s shoulder and saying “She will be named Anna. I will return when she is eleven.” He leaves, drives his Jeep from Manhattan to a West Side high-rise apartment where he moves to his balcony and begins taking pictures with a high-powered camera of an adjacent apartment. The view is of a woman, man and young girl sitting at the breakfast table. It is the girl Mara’s 5th birthday. In the next chapter the reader finds the disgruntled teen Mara glancing at the clock and deciding to leave a restaurant because someone had not shown. She passes a vagrant who “gawps” at her and asks “Are you Mara?” and follows with “You look just like your mother.” He is late for their meeting, persuades her to return to the restaurant and he continues that his name is Judah and had been married to her mother Cora, and would explain why he had lost touch. From this point the story unfolds as we follow this man who had been incarcerated for eight years and until now had not discovered anything worth sobering up for until this daughter becomes the 25th victim of a serial kidnapper/killer. He along with Summer Durand, a street smart detective, embarks upon attempting to find her along with Summer’s own daughter who also becomes a victim. Along the way, Judah becomes a ‘born again Christian’ and the tale gradually expands to involve numerous other characters. Some are victims, others, many in high official positions, enter the story and the author additionally expounds on many factors including involvement in the moral state of existence as encountered in today’s society, a look at humanity’s future as it lies under the “Curse”, and as with perestroika in Russia, one “…cannot bring about sweeping change in government that has been long entrenched within their respective mode of operation and not bring about cataclysmic chaos and wreckage.” He then continues with details about “the Perestroika Movement that erupted within American scholarship in the year 2000.” The action continues shifting from scene to scene and includes quite graphic details of sadistically motivated anatomical destruction along with the other activity as Judah somewhat emulates Jesus and eventually a number of the secondary ‘protagonists’ proceed together “…to begin to usher in a new era, where the curse will begin to roll back.”
Discussion The author has set forth a scathing, and quite probably true, assessment of society as it exists today. It is a story of good versus evil with the good embodied in a derelict who ‘has seen the light’ to become ‘a man of God’; the evil, a depraved, sadistic, Satan-like character. A large part of the tale is presented in a somewhat unreal (?), ethereal (?), spiritual manner and as a whole in a way that no doubt will intrigue readers with a certain mind set. Regrettably, although the thoughts behind the story are totally embraced by this reader, a somewhat more 'disciplined' approach would have made it more enjoyable. A caveat also must be provided for readers with respect to the inclusion of graphic anatomical destruction and also perhaps for the reader who may be ‘uncomfortable’ with religious discussions.
Hush Child has a way of roping in you and forcing you to emotionally connect with it. I fell in love with the beginning of the story as a father and teenage daughter reunite and try to work on their relationship. Of course, the heartwarming aspect of the novel only fuels the fear and suspense for what happens later. I became engrossed in the story to the point that I wanted to put off work just to see the conclusion.
The author really knows how to work up an intricate story line here, which is what won me over right away. His use of characters is also fantastic and makes you feel as if you are a part of their world. The dialogue shared between them is very realistic too, which made page after page fly by.
I only wish I could start this book fresh as discovering all of the little details that made up the story was a lot of fun.
Hush, Child will draw you in first with Judah Greer, who is sought out by his daughter whom he had to abandon because her mother put restraining orders on him. Though he knew he would be breaking the restraining orders he was determined to help and support her.

David Halvorsen then brings in the Prophet. He has been behind the abduction of dozens of girls. Strangely, most of these girls have been the product of rape. The intensity level increases as Judah is labeled as the Prophet.

The evil behind the brothers, Baer and Prophet goes unchecked until a new player enters their game of Humanism and human trafficking. He is called The Father and he offers peace and love to the innocent in this spiritual battle. I love the statement, “Where there is light, there is no darkness. And where there is no darkness, there is no dungeon”.
